Why this platform exists
Inside Favela is an independent editorial project. We tell the story of Rio from a perspective that has been missing so far.
I was nineteen when I first landed in Rio. I stayed three months, came back six times and eventually moved to Botafogo for a few years. What still moves me today: how quickly the image people in Europe have of the favelas falls apart after a single sentence you hear in Rocinha or Vidigal.
It isn't that there are no hard realities. There are. But they are one detail, not the whole picture. And anyone who only knows the detail doesn't know Rio.

Inside Favela is an attempt to change that. We work with writers and photographers from Rio, with historians, with people who live there. We publish in German and English — and Portuguese will follow.
More is coming over the next months: verified local guides, community tours, an events calendar and later property listings in the morros. All with the same standard: close, respectful, precise.
